A woman who was adopted as a baby seeks out her dying birth mom and clashes with a half-sister who doesn’t want to share the upcoming inheritance with anyone.

Kristin is happily married to Daniel with two kids, Josh and Lindsay. She has known from a young age that she was adopted and has grown curious about her birth parents as an adult, but she didn’t want to upset her mom by seeking out her birth parents. When her mom suddenly dies, the urge to uncover her history returns. She convinces her dad to help her find her birth mom, which he does against his better judgment.

After taking a flight to Texas, Kristin arrives on the doorstep of Roger Harris, her mom’s wealthy husband. She was told that her mom Julie is dying with organ failure and doctors don’t know why. Right away, Kristin meets Daisy, her much younger half-sister who recently graduated nursing school. Daisy does not welcome this intrusion to their lives during a dire time, but Roger invites Kristin into his home.

Kristin meets Julie, who has regretted her decision to give her baby away for all these years. They hit it off, angering Daisy even more. Daisy makes smoothies for Julie that contain small amounts of arsenic, as she wants her mom to die so she can target Roger next and inherit their fortune. With Kristin in the house, Daisy feels her plan could be interrupted.

Julie’s day nurse, Amber, discovers the bottle of arsenic in a cabinet. Daisy kills her, and disposes of her body and car. With her sudden disappearance, Roger has no choice but to let Daisy look after her mom until he can get another nurse. There is one issue for Daisy - her neighbor Janet saw Daisy driving off in Amber’s car and tells Roger. He confronts his step-daughter with questions and she makes up a plausible explanation, only she refuses to let Janet get away with snooping and causes her to have a fatal accident.

Before Julie dies, she gives Kristin two pieces of jewelry that mean a lot to her for the kids, and her expensive bridal set for Kristin to keep. Daisy has some fun by having Kristin take the tainted smoothies to Julie so she has a part in her death. When Julie continues to hang on, Daisy gives her a much larger dose of arsenic and causes her to die.

While making funeral plans, Daisy discovers Kristin has Julie’s jewelry and feels it all should be hers so she steals the items from Kristin’s room. Roger locates the stolen items but is knocked out by Daisy and put in the basement freezer. Kristin decides to get ice cream from the freezer and finds his nearly dead body. She pulls him out and receives Daisy’s wrath for interfering. 

Daisy ties Kristin up with plans to make it look like her half-sister was after the family fortune and killed both Julie and Roger for it before committing suicide. As Kristin fights back, Daisy realizes her plan will never work so she will have to kill Kristin and go on the run, but Kristin outsmarts her foe and returns to her family, much wealthier than when she left.
