Playing the Field

Logline

After dominating youth leagues and high school football, a young woman struggles with womanhood, academic studies, gender expectations, and family tragedy while trying to find her place as quarterback on her new college team.

Synopsis

Jenna Ramey was born to play football. Having a dad who is an excellent college coach aids in her developing throwing skills at a young age. Once Sam secures a position on a pee-wee team for his daughter, she begins to earn the respect of not only her teammates but from those around the league, including coaches.

The only problem Jenna has is that her mom, Helen, doesn’t want her daughter playing the sport. Sam convinces her to let Jenna be herself, and Helen finally accepts her for who she is. Following a practice, Helen wrecks her car with J

Jenna in the back and dies. Sam is suddenly a single father about to raise a teenage girl.

Jenna excels as quarterback through high school. While Sam wants her to play for his team, she decides to attend a different university that also offers her a scholarship so people can’t say she only gets to play because her dad is the coach. Once she arrives at her new college, she finds things to be much more difficult than she had imagined. The men on her team are mostly unaccepting, especially the two main quarterbacks, Josh and Tyler. They fear a girl will show them up and make them look worse than they already are.

While struggling to fit on the team, Jenna also has a hard time remembering all of the plays and keeping up her schoolwork. She is placed on academic watch with only a few weeks to pull up her grades. The only bright side is when she meets Chad, a newspaper reporter. He is very taken with Jenna but his cheerleader girlfriend, Chelsea, fears Jenna will take Chad from her and causes drama.

Overwhelmed by her new college life, Jenna runs home to Sam to garner his sympathy, only Sam fails to give her what she wants. He has taught his daughter to be who she is by being strong and reminds her of that. Jenna feels rejuvenated and returns to school, where she starts a comeback that impresses her coaches into some starting time.

Chad finally has enough of Chelsea and breaks up with her. That gives Jenna the chance with him she has been waiting for. Following a game where she leads her team to a win, Sam, having listened to it back home on the radio, has a heart attack. Jenna runs home to look after him but once he is released from the hospital, he lovingly throws her out to return to the field and her classes.

The final game of the season is against Sam’s team, Cincinnati. While he hasn’t been coaching since the attack, he insists on coaching the game against his daughter, to Jenna’s dismay. It’s a tough game with Jenna knowing how Sam coaches and Sam knowing how she plays. Making things worse, Josh damages Jenna’s helmet in hopes she will be taken out. She calls him on it and finishes the game with a big play she runs against Sam’s defense. She falls just short and Northridge loses, but her coaches and teammates have no complaints about how she played.
