A False Reality

Logline

After living the perfect life in a comatose dream world for ten years, a young man struggles to accept a very different reality upon awakening, one that includes ruthless gangsters out to kill him, and a daughter he has never known.

Synopsis

Bobby plans to marry Rachael after high school. When she is accepted into state college, Bobby can’t fathom being away from her for four years, and his part-time after school job at a small store won’t pay him enough to go with her. Sensing his desperation, Eddie, a gang member working for Mob kingpin Vince Romano, entices Bobby with quick and easy money, a lot of it. Against his better judgment, Bobby takes the job of delivering packages to drug dealers and other thugs. He begins to accumulate a nice sum to help him be with Rachael.

With Bobby working more and more, his grades slip, he passes on his dream of going to art school, and his relationship with Rachael suffers. When he goes to Rachael to show off his new car, they fight over his job, and Rachael storms off to her house.

Later, Bobby encounters Vince and tries to quit the job, but Vince won’t allow it. Bobby pleads his case, hoping that will be the end of his relationship with Vince. During a car chase, both cars are ensnared in a terrible accident.

Bobby spends a few years in prison. All he thinks about is being with Rachael again. When he is released, a very successful Rachael invites Bobby to stay at her apartment until he gets back on his feet. Love blossoms and the two marry. Two kids, Jason and Lexi, follow over the next ten years. Bobby has everything he’s ever dreamed of.

A co-worker convinces Bobby to play the big lottery drawing. He chooses birthdates of his family and wins millions of dollars. They move to a nicer home and Bobby quits his job to work on his art for a new comic book. While out to dinner with his wife and kids, they are struck by a car in a violent crash.

Bobby wakes in a hospital to learn the world he loved isn’t real. He has been in a coma for ten years. Catherine introduces him to his daughter Megan. Rachael was pregnant with her at the time of the accident and then died during childbirth. The news devastates Bobby. He gradually bonds with Megan and starts to enjoy his real life.

Vince was crippled in the car accident and blames Bobby. Upon learning that he has woken from his coma, Vince sets out for revenge by having his men kidnap Megan. Bobby takes off with a weapon to locate Vince and fight to bring his daughter home. At Vince’s secluded house, Bobby breaks in and shoots anyone who tries to stop him from getting Megan out of there, including Vince.

8 years later, Bobby attends Megan’s funeral following an overdose. Having nothing left to live for, Bobby stops taking his medication, understanding that he could slip back into a coma. Once he does, he is united with Rachael and the kids in his dream world, along with Megan. It’s the only world that can now make him happy.
