Houseguests From Hell

Logline

When a woman invites her old college friend and her family to stay at her home while visiting town, she soon learns that she has placed her own family in danger due to a con man willing to do whatever it takes to benefit his own life.

Synopsis

Valerie Davis has a good life with her husband Kyle and 12-year-old daughter Sarah. After posting on social media, an old college friend of hers, Kathy, messages her. They were best friends in college and haven’t seen each other since graduation. By the next morning, Kathy is asking if her family can stay with Valerie’s while they are in town for her husband’s interview. Excited to see her old friend, Valerie discusses it with Kyle. Although skeptical, he agrees.

Kathy arrives with her husband Chase and 13-year-old daughter Libby. Sarah is forced to share her room with Libby and is less than pleased about it. Libby is in a hurry to grow up. Not only does she smoke weed in Sarah’s bedroom, but she also conceals a magazine of scantily clad men. Sarah wants nothing to do with any of it while also not wishing to make waves between her mom and old friend, so she stays quiet.

The visiting couple is lazy, which places an extra burden on Valerie to cook for them. Their old ratty van blocks both of the Davis cars from pulling out of the garage so when the van won’t start on the same morning Kyle has an urgent meeting, things start to unravel. Kyle is forced to call a cab. Valerie needs to take a city bus to drop Sarah off at school and to get to her own job. She asks Chase and Kathy to please fix their vehicle before Kyle and she arrive home later. Chase claims they don’t have the money for a new alternator. Left with no choice, Valerie gives Kathy her credit card and tells her to charge the part.

Chase does buy an alternator, but he also goes on a spending spree with Kathy and Libby before Kathy is forced to give the credit card back. Valerie uncovers what they did later that night when looking at her account. Meanwhile, Chase takes Kyle out for a beer. When Chase goes to the restroom, he runs into Greg, who knows Chase by a different name and claims he owes him a few thousand dollars. Seeing Greg as a potential spoiler to his plans, Chase kills him in the parking lot and returns to Kyle inside, pretending like nothing happened.

Following an unauthorized party at their house, thrown by Chase and Kathy, Valerie discovers some of her expensive jewelry is missing. When confronted, Chase claims someone at the party must have taken it and he vows to find out who. He takes the jewelry that he stole to a pawn shop and kills the owner so he can keep the jewelry and rob him.

Kathy and Libby grow suspicious of Chase. While snooping, Kathy finds an old driver’s license showing that Chase is really Peter Simpson. Chase kills her, then abducts Libby to keep her quiet. He is also forced to snag Valerie. At an abandoned warehouse, Valerie offers him money to let Libby and her go. Chase and Valerie go to a bank to withdraw the money and after, Chase is prepared to kill Valerie and let Libby die tied up at the warehouse. Valerie fights for her life and shoots Kyle. With Libby, who was actually Kathy’s niece, needing a new home, Valerie and Kyle decode to foster her so she can have a second chance.
