After turning around his misfortune with the guidance of a Magical 8-ball with a personality, a man must take control of his own life when he breaks the toy during a dispute with the object.

Tyler is behind the 8-ball. In one day, he loses his job, his girlfriend, and finds out he is being evicted. While walking in the rain, he comes across a quaint toy store named “Tommy's Toys”. The eccentric elderly owner, Marv, gives Tyler something he hopes will change his fortune – a Magic 8-ball. Tyler takes the gift home and tosses it aside, thinking it's just a dumb toy.

But he finds out that the 8-ball, named Hugo, is truly magical. With the use of his die, Hugo not only communicates with his new owner but guides him into changing his life. He tells Tyler to take him into town, where a homeless man in the subway station gives Tyler a nice suit that’s too small for him. In the pocket is a small amount of cash that Tyler wants to use for a meal, but Hugo insists he buy a lottery ticket with the money. The ticket wins Tyler $500 he can use toward his back rent. Hugo pushes him to buy a nicer suit with the money and go to a local diner while wearing it. There, he meets an adoring waitress, Kelly.

Hugo gives Tyler a stock pick, only Tyler doesn’t know what it is. When he reads it out loud and Hugo’s message that big news is coming, Dan, a big stock broker sitting in the next booth, overhears and buys the stock. He returns to the diner and leaves his business card with Kelley to give to Tyler if he returns. When Tyler receives the card and calls Dan, he suddenly has a meeting where he can land a job at the firm if he provides another great pic. Hugo gives him one and Dan sets up Tyler with his own office.

In the meantime, not everyone is a fan of Hugo. Tyler is staying with his best friend Brad after being locked out of his apartment. Brad has overheard Tyler speaking to Hugo for advice and sneaks him out of Tyler’s room to ask where he should take a big client the next night. Hugo says take him to a strip club. Brad is hesitant at first but goes along. His client is upset at Brad for taking him to such a seedy place and nearly gets Brad fired. It turns out that Hugo hates Brad and was trying to mess with him.

Tyler gets the job at the brokerage firm. Under Hugo’s guidance, he makes successful pick after pick. The newfound money changes his life. He buys a car, takes Kelley on nice dates, and moves back into his own apartment, only there’s one issue: Hugo feels unappreciated and refuses to give Tyler a new pick for an important meeting in the morning. Tyler pleads and threatens but nothing works. In a moment of rage, he throws Hugo against the wall and causes him to leak. Tyler returns hm to the toy store, where Marc suggests Tyler go solo. He leaves without his beloved toy.

Tyler works all evening to come up with a new pick for his meeting. He presents three stocks and recommends one before quitting. He feels like a fraud who doesn’t deserve the job. Marv returns a fixed Hugo to Tyler, who also receives a call from Dan to return to his job.
