Killer Trails

Logline

When a teen joins her detective father’s investigation of a popular Halloween attraction linked to several disappearances, they must work together to stop a maniac and save each other from becoming the next victim.

Synopsis

Following the loss of his wife and needing a fresh start, Stan Weston opens “Killer Trails”, a haunted attraction, in time for the Halloween season. Stan and his teen daughter Darcy live on the premises, where they work together to clean up the trails and make them appealing to teens seeking a thrilling experience. The former caretaker, Simon, somewhat slow and suspicious, continues his work for the new owner.

Killer Trails opens to disappointment. The small crowd complains about the trails being lame compared to Haunted Forest. Stan overhears the complaints and worries he will fail. He doesn’t have the money to spruce up the attraction. Meanwhile, Darcy sneaks around with her boyfriend Ron, a fellow employee. Her best friend Rachael, the daughter of a detective, invites Darcy over for a sleepover to cheer her up.

Two women are murdered on the trails, their bodies used as realistic props by an unseen killer. Patrons take notice and find themselves impressed. Word begins to spread. The killer hides the bodies during the day when Stan is around and brings them out at night for the festivities. When the bodies begin to smell too much, they are dumped into a nearby pond. Their car is stripped and crushed at the junkyard next door.

More bodies are needed as replacements. Under the eerie atmosphere, someone can even be killed in front of others, who fully believe it’s just a show. Derek Hammond, the owner of Haunted Forest, notices more and more of his regular customers are going to his competitor instead. He takes his son along as he sneaks into Killer Trails to sabotage some of their props Stan has gradually added as business picks up. His son is killed by a scarecrow. The killer chops off Hammond’s head and leaves it on top of the ax, a sight that both grosses out and excites guests who see it due to the realism.

Bret, Rachael’s dad, is assigned to the case of several missing kids, including a good friend of Darcy’s. When speaking to the girl’s mom, who doesn’t believe for a second that Kari ran off with her boyfriend, Bret learns they were going to Killer Trails the night they disappeared. That is a common denominator in the disappearances and too much to be a coincidence. Bret visits the trails with Stan’s permission to look for clues. Rachael follows him. She finds someone’s dropped test near Hammond’s body. Just as she is about to alert her dad, the killer knocks Bret out and chases Rachael. Her pleas for help aren’t taken seriously, as patrons believe she’s just an actress doing a performance.

Following her abduction, Rachael and Bret awaken, tied to trees. Ron has killed Stan, only he wasn’t working alone. Darcy plays the victim as well, but she has been aiding Ron to boost her father’s trails to keep her from potentially moving away. After a fierce battle between Rachael and Darcy, Rachael comes up victorious and stays by Bret’s side as he is taken away by an ambulance.
