A troubled guardian angel is sent to prevent a man from committing suicide before his time, each helping the other to learn valuable lessons that will change how they view things in their own existence.

Everything seems to go against Stewart. His wife Linda is very controlling. He struggles at work. Even his dog rebels against him. He fails to make a baby with his wife, leading to Linda’s insistence that they be checked by a fertility doctor. She is cleared from having any issues, meaning it’s Stewart. Since he can’t give her the baby she wants, she leaves her husband and prepares to sell the house out from under him. Stewart is literally losing his will to live.

Enter Tim. He’s a guardian angel stuck in purgatory because he killed someone to protect his daughter. That left him in a gray area. Darius, his boss, tells him that in order to earn his wings, he must turn Stewart’s life around within a week or he will be condemned to the other place. At first, Stewart is convinced Tim is a burglar. Tim stops Stewart from taking his own life each time he tries by using a little magic. Once Tim convinces him that maybe he really is a guardian angel, Stewart starts to warm up to him.

After losing his job because of personal troubles, Stewart enlists Tim’s help to get it back. There is a big potato chip account the company is trying to land, but they have failed to come up with a slogan that pleases the owner. Tim appears to unknowingly give Stewart a great line when in reality, he was meant to pass it on for Stewart’s benefit. There is also Sally, the receptionist in Stewart’s office. She is taken with Stewart but couldn’t do anything about it due to him being married. Now that he is separated, Stewart begins to court her with Tim’s help.

Sam is kept tied outside Linda’s Mom’s house. She has no interest in the animal. Tim helps him to steal back the dog with comical results. Things are starting to really look up for Stewart. While he managed to get a job at his old company, it’s now in the mailroom. With some plotting by Tim, Stewart is given his job back as an advertising exec when he provides the chip slogan during an important meeting.

In order to reward Tim for his help, Stewart takes him out to dinner where he has arranged for Tim’s grown daughter to be. He longs to see her one last time, but it’s forbidden for him to seek her out. Since Stewart planned it, they might get a pass. It brings Tim such relief to see his daughter is doing alright following his death.

There is one thing left to accomplish. When Linda left, she was ready to sell the house out from under Stewart. He feels he deserves the house. Linda had starred in a porn film while she was in college studying law. Stewart hands out copies to business partners at her law firm in order to blackmail her into giving him the house. When Linda reluctantly agrees, Stewart poses as her assistant and gathers the videos before the execs have a chance to look at them. When Tim isn’t looking, Stewart locates info on his future, including Sally dying after they have a daughter together. To protect Stewart from knowing that info, Darius erases his memory of Tim and gives his angel his wings.
