When a lonely truck driver takes a teen runaway under his wing, the two learn a lot about life and each other as the girl tries to hide from her abusive step-father.

15-year-old Amber has a terrible home life with a drunk mother and a step-father who sexually abuses her. She can't take it anymore and runs away from home.

Her mom Tammy is arrested for drunk driving. Beverly, her mom, bails her out on the condition she checks into rehab. Tammy reluctantly agrees to get better before Amber returns home.

Amber comes to a truck stop, where she meets Charlie, a lonely older trucker. He feels sorry for the girl and offers her dinner while calling the police to report her as a runaway. Amber realizes the police are coming for her and flees while Charlie is in the restroom.

Charlie reluctantly leaves in his truck. Once he’s on the road and crosses state lines, he discovers Amber hiding in the back of his cab. Charlie wants to take her home before he is charged with kidnapping, but Amber convinces him to let her ride along. Her panic about her home life touches Charlie so he gives in, although he worries this will end badly for him.

Charlie makes Amber call home to let Tammy know she’s all right. No one is there so Amber leaves a message. Her step-father Dave is able to discover that Amber is with a trucker and Charlie’s name. From there, he finds out where the truck is heading - L.A.

As Charlie drives cross country, Amber and he bond. He has a teen daughter in L.A. that doesn’t have anything to do with him. Amber has lost her real father and is abused by Dave. With each missing something in their own life, they bond incredibly well. Charlie teaches her about trucking and slips in interesting facts about states they pass through so she receives some education while on the road.

In L.A., Charlie drops his load off and takes Amber to dinner, where they happen to walk by his daughter’s school. He wants to hide from her and just watch, but Amber tries to push the two together. When Catherine wants nothing to do with her dad, Amber goes off on her and walks off with Charlie.

As they eat, Catherine joins them. With Amber’s guidance, Charlie makes up with Catherine. When Charlie and Amber return to the truck, Dave makes a sudden appearance and tries to kidnap Amber. Charlie battles him but is stabbed in the gut. Amber saves Charlie just in time.

Back home, Amber’s life greatly improves. She attends art school and is reunited with Tammy, who is all well. Charlie hits it off with Tammy, leaving the girls to hope they may become sisters in the future.
