A Midwife's Deception

Logline

When a 50-year-old woman defies the odds and conceives naturally, she finds her life turned upside-down when her live-in midwife sets her sights on the baby boy she carries. (Lifetime)

Synopsis

Abby Anderson struggles with her life when her last child leaves for college and she hits her 50th birthday. She's certain that she has begun menopause, despite having a tubal many years ago, but her doctor drops a bombshell on her - she's pregnant. Tests show that the baby boy is healthy in every way, leading Abby to make the decision to keep him.

Steven, her ex-husband and father of the baby, doesn't want to raise another child at his age but fails to change Abby's mind. Their oldest daughter Vicki, a mother of two young children, agrees with her dad that giving birth at 50 is just too risky. Abby stands her ground and persuades Vicki that this is the right thing to do.

Little does Abby know that Carol Thatcher, an unstable woman who lost her only baby at 3 weeks, is looking to replace her dead baby with another little boy. After reading a newspaper article on Abby's miracle pregnancy, Carol sees this as her opportunity. Being a credited nurse and midwife helps greatly. She finds a way to enter Abby's life without being too obvious. Although she offers her services to the pregnant monarch, Abby would rather do this herself. It takes Carol drugging Abby and nearly causing her to collapse to make Abby realize maybe she does need help.

Carol moves into Abby's house until the baby is born. Under her roof, she does everything possible to keep Abby close and under her control so she can give Carol a healthy baby. She even tells Abby she has high blood pressure in order to keep her home more and talks her into not seeing her doctor. She has a live-in nurse, after all.

Later in the pregnancy, Abby decides to see her obstetrician. When Carol finds out, she arranges a little accident for the doctor to keep her away. She also kills one of Abby's co-workers who grows suspicious of her.

As delivery grows near, Carol becomes more protective. She persuades Abby to take her maternity leave, only she doesn't count on Abby patching things up with Steven. The two take a childbirth/parenting class together in preparation of raising the boy as a couple. Threatened by Steven, Carol makes her move by drugging Abby and injecting Steven with a substance that causes a heart attack.

Abby wakes in a cabin, tied to the bed. Carol gives her drugs to start her labor, not expecting Vicki to uncover what takes place and come to the rescue while the police prepare a warrant. After Abby is forced to deliver the baby, she has one last chance to defeat Carol in order to save not only the baby, but her own life and that of her daughter from Carol's crazed plot.
