When a science experiment goes terribly wrong, two men and two women are forced to live as the other gender with comical results until the scientist can return them to their own bodies. 

Mad Scientist Tim Ledford creates a mind-reading machine. As an experiment, he persuades his uptight girlfriend Mindy, and his rogue best friend Aaron to become test subjects. In order to get a better feel for the device, he also invites his next door neighbors, Len and Amanda, over for a little party. There, he talks them into becoming guinea pigs. Amanda is 9 months pregnant, while Len is a very unsympathetic husband.

While wearing helmets connected by wires to the machine, the couples seem to be in discomfort during the process. Tim tries to shut it off but it explodes before he can. The couples are thrown to the floor and left dazed. As they recover, something alarming becomes obvious. Mindy’s mind is now in Aaron’s body, and Aaron’s mind is in her body. Conversely, Len’s mind now belongs to Amanda’s body, and her mind is inside of his.

With the machine destroyed, Tim needs time to fix it. The couples are forced to do the best they can in their partner’s shoes temporarily. Mindy and Aaron work at the same advertisement firm. A potential account for a motorcycle chain is Mindy’s responsibility. She now has to work on it in Aaron’s body. When she visits the owner at one of his shops and claims Aaron is helping Mindy with the presentation, the owner offers “Aaron” a loaner motorcycle. Although she is in Aaron’s body, Mindy finds herself exhilarated over riding a hog. The experience gives her a new direction on how to handle the account.

Aaron has his own issues. While he works on trying to modify Mindy’s body and reputation, he experiences a period and thinks he is dying. When visiting a bar with Mindy, a patron Aaron clashed with earlier starts a fight with him, only Mindy, still possessing the body, panics. Mindy’s body punches out the obtrusive man, which brings the two closer together. Excited to discover what sex is like for the other gender, they spend a night together. They find it both exhilarating and weird.

Meanwhile, the Dales have different issues. In Len’s body, Amanda is forced to take over his job as a bobcat driver digging out a pond. Her first days are a mess, to the point Len could lose his job with a baby coming. Len is forced to go to the obstetrician appointments, which appall him. He also has to deal with normal pregnancy symptoms. While Amanda helps him through it all, he teaches her to use the bobcat well enough to successfully dig the pond. Len gives birth to their daughter, leaving Amanda feeling left out, but they agree they will try again when Amanda can actually give birth.

Mindy’s campaign for Farley cycles, centering around female customers, is a big success. After announcing he’s gay, Tim fixes his processor and returns his subjects to their correct bodies. Mindy and Aaron have already fallen for each other so Tim is left to figure out what to do next. While having a drink, he meets the man Mindy had beaten up and they bond over their sorrows.
