A childhood bedtime tale becomes a horrid reality when a young woman finds an ancient idol and accidentally brings to life a grisly demon who "erases" exposed body parts of his victims while they sleep.

After her brother Dan tells her to dig in a specific location for Native American artifacts, archeologist Kara Denton uncovers an ugly little idol with a grim back story. The spirit of an evil witch doctor, also a nighttime demon, inhabits it. The demon erases exposed body parts of anyone who speaks its name with the use of an acidic powder.

Only Kara doesn’t know the idol’s history until the demon kills her fiancé Mark after she has said its name. No one believes her that she saw a cloaked entity in her bedroom the night he died, nor that it’s linked to the story Dan tormented her with as a kid. Kara moves back home and starts to develop a relationship with the lead detective investigating Mark’s death, Jim Harding.

After learning of the story, Detective Marcy has her hand maimed by the demon. A nurse who overhears the story also speaks the demon’s name and is killed in front of her young daughter. While Jim has a hard time believing such a crazy tale, nothing else makes sense.

Kara takes Jim along with her to a Native American chief she knows to see if there is any way to stop the demon. The chief offers them his specialty drink while he explains that the only way to stop it is for the person originally responsible for resurrecting Eraser Man to die. Kara believes that to be her since she dug up the idol and faces the dilemma of sacrificing herself to save everyone around her. Jim becomes drunk on the drink and Kara takes him home to her bed to sleep it off.

Dan has lunch with Kara’s friend Ashley, where he tells her about this demon that Kara believes is behind the incidents. While telling her husband Will, their young son Kyle overhears and is too scared to sleep now. Will takes his anger out on Kara when she calls. Now alerted that Kyle has been placed in danger, Kara tries her best to warn his parents, but Will thinks she is crazy and refuses to listen.

Kara races to Ashley’s house and arrives just in time to stop Eraser Man from harming Kyle. Will can’t believe his eyes. After the demon disappears, Kara helps Ashley to tie a sheet over their bed to conceal their body parts while they sleep. She knows that she must confront the demon she believes she has conjured up but doesn’t quite know how.

Worried for their daughter’s well-being, Carolyn and Charles have a psychiatrist friend speak with her. He leaves a few sleeping pills and suggests they slip her one at bedtime. Kara drinks the juice and falls asleep on the couch. Her younger brother Josh overheard talking about the demon and now can’t sleep. When he finally dozes, Eraser Man comes for him. After hearing his scream, Kara races to save her family. When Dan arrives, Kara learns a horrid truth - Dan had her conjure the demon so the entire family would likely die and he inherits everything. After a tense battle, Dan, the one really responsible, is dead and Eraser man disappears for good.
