A group of weekend campers is hunted by a visiting alien capable of replicating anything it comes in contact with, or anyone.

Ben and Sam Hollen head off to the mountains for a weekend trip to repair their marriage. While they haven’t been married long, Ben’s close friends always seem to tag along wherever they go. This puts a strain on their relationship, as Sam wants to spend alone time with her new husband. She tolerates them coming along, but she is less than pleased with the situation.

En route, a strange burst of wind topples trees. One lodges under Ben’s van. The sedan that follows them barely stops in time. Ben, along with his male friends: Wayne, Greg, Paul, and Nick manage to remove the tree. They fail to notice the gas tank now leaks slightly. The next thing they encounter is a deer racing across the road just in front of them, being chased by a strange goo substance. The deer cries out and silences.

The group camps out in a remote area the is secluded from civilization. The girlfriends of Nick and Paul, Carla and Trish, don’t care for Sam much and look for ways to cause trouble. While Sam goes off alone to get water from a stream, a tree seems to move closer behind her back. Ben arrives to check on her and doesn’t believe her story. Trees don’t just move. What they don’t realize is that a krelok, an intelligent alien being capable of transforming into anything it comes in contact with, hunts them.

While Ben and Sam are gone from camp, one of the guys lets it slip that Ben had brought a former girlfriend with them on a camping trip when he was separated from Sam. She has no idea what he did. Trish and Carla are anxious to tell Sam just to cause trouble. Nick and Paul threaten to throw their makeup into the lake if they do.

During the night, Greg goes to the woods alone to pee. The krelok gets him. The next day, everyone is worried about where he is initially, but feel like he is playing a prank. They go to the lake for a good time. In the water, Paul convulses as the green goo is now inside him and eats through bones and tissues like acid. The others realize it had hidden inside the sandwich Paul ate.

The group flees back to camp. Inside her car, Carla attempts to start it before the goo collapses around her from the fake vehicle. Greg makes a sudden appearance but it’s actually the krelok in his form. The others eventually figure it out. During a battle with the alien, Nick dies and Trish is dragged off unconscious. Ben becomes wounded and can’t travel. He persuades Sam to head for the ranger’s station to get help.

Sam reluctantly complies. At the station, the krelok/goo tries to get her. She barely escapes. While walking, she comes across the spaceship, where she is forced to battle the alien. Following a grueling battle to the death, she returns to Ben where she left him in the woods, only this isn’t the real Ben. There was a second krelok no one knew about who had consumed Ben and took his place.
