A Striking Similarity
A scientist’s whole world crumbles around him when he clones a lost love, destroying the resulting young girl’s life as well as his own when he develops dark feelings toward her.
Synopsis
Scientist Martin Sorrel loves his wife Cindy dearly. They are perfect together. While he works on research that could possibly lead to the cloning of humans, Cindy is killed by an intruder in their home. Martin is left devastated without her. His boss, Mr. Harrington, plants the seed that they could try their first human clone by cloning Martin’s dead wife. Martin resists at first but the more he misses his sweet Cindy, the more he wants her back.
Using his research, he clones Cindy. A surrogate gives birth to a baby girl that Martin decides to raise as his own daughter. Harrington has connections to make it happen. At first, Martin only struggles with new parenting. He raises a baby girl alone and leaves her with a neighbor while he works. Fears begin to arise that she won’t be exactly like the woman he fell in love with so he uses Cindy’s journals she kept from an early age to highlight key events he feels shaped her into the woman she became.
The acts start small with Cindy sitting at a certain age, then walking. As she grows, the challenges become more intense. Grown Cindy started playing the piano at age four so Martin starts his Cindy with lessons. She has the ability to be a prodigy like the Cindy before her, but she prefers to play soccer with her friends. Martin upsets her by insisting she will continue with the instrument.
Martin’s prior in-laws see him with young Cindy one day and are shocked at how much she looks like their deceased daughter. Martin tells them that he adopted the girl because she looked like Cindy. Despite the couple wanting to be a part of their lives, Martin refuses in fear they will take his daughter away from him, or they will discover the truth.
At age 12, Martin forces Cindy to prepare some of her mom’s favorite recipes. Cindy has no interest in cooking but she is left with no choice. When she doesn’t perform as well as the adult Cindy had, Martin scolds her. It’s very important that she cooks just like she had.
Cindy enters high school, where she is somewhat of a loner because Martin shields her from others. Her friend Shelly pushes her to go to their prom with Jake, a handsome jock who has eyes for her. Martin finds out she lied to him about the dance and goes there to bring her home. He ends up punching Jake and causing a scene before he drags Cindy out of the event.
Cindy grows more and more creeped out by her dad, who insists she call him Martin. She does some snooping and uncovers the sordid truth, and that Martin had tried to shape her into the woman he loved. She goes to a priest for help, but Martin finds out where she is on her 18th birthday and confronts her. He wants them to be together as a couple. During a struggle, Cindy kills him. Overridden with guilt, she takes the gun Martin brought with him and commits suicide.
